Hello and welcome to my musical world!
My name is Darius Frowner and I am a pianist, musical director and teacher (I am particularly proud of finishing my first year at Harlem School of the Arts as a coach). For many years I have hosted and accompany singers at New York City's famous Duplex Piano Bar in a variety of styles including pop, R&B, and musical theater at a very popular open mic night called "Singer Spotlight" (Mondays and Thurdays). The open mic includes Broadway performers, locals and international tourists. I am a member of AFM Local 802, I have been awarded a Bistro Award, and nominated for a Mac Award for excellence in Piano Bar Entertainment.
I have accompanied many performers in my career, some of them have been of Broadway fame. The most prestigious people I have accompanied have been Broadway legend Norm Lewis in concert at the Kennedy Center; Billy Porter, Adam Pascal for a Benefit Gala for Westchester Medical Center, a teen chorale who sang with Kristin Chenoweth at the Lunt-Fontanne on Broadway; and a teen chorale who sang with Patti LuPone and Sutton Foster at the Mayo Performing Arts Center.
I am also a Musical Director for local, regional and touring productions. The most notable recent production that I music directed was "Oklahoma!" at Denver Center for the Performing Arts (director Chris Coleman). This was especially ground-breaking because it was an all African American version of the show and garnered a lot of national attention. The production won many awards including the Henry Award for Outstanding Musical.
The other part of my career is in arts education. I have recently finished my first year on faculty at Harlem School of the Arts, guiding talented students toward artistic fulfillment through the difficult landscape of the pandemic. While the pandemic presented many problems and issues to overcome, I believe that I was able to guide my students into this new technological world of theater quite successfully (check out the second picture in my Gallery for some digital music theatre magic!). I am also the Musical Supervisor of the Performing Arts school at Mayo Center for the Performing Arts; I help oversee a thriving fully accredited program offering instruction and performance opportunities.
One of the most satisfying parts of my career is always finding new ways to encourage and cultivate interest in the arts in young people. We have had the opportunity to appear with recording stars like Vanessa Williams and Abba and Broadway stars like Kristin Chenoweth, Patti LuPone, and will appear with Audra McDonald in early 2020. In 2016 our program from MPAC was invited to bring select students to Washington D.C. to participate in Michelle Obama's Broadway At The White House.
I have also taught internationally in my career. In 2018, I went to Rome to be a master teacher and judge for "Coppa Italia", a televised music competition. During my stay, I learned that Italy held a similar passion for the arts! I did an Italian television interview about the experience which aired in 2019.
Along with the airing of the television competition, 2019 held many surprises and successes for me. One of the highlights of my year was making my Carnegie Hall debut accompanying tenor Christian Gibbs. I also helped design "Faces Of Black History", a musical and educational touring performance, underwritten by McDonald's Corporation. "Take A Stand" is a song I composed for the show, which was performed at various schools and universities.
For corporate events and parties I work with an array of dynamic singers including Broadway names from shows like "Hamilton" and "Waitress" .I am able to custom tailor the entertainment for a variety of needs and venues; from private parties, weddings and cocktail hours to major fundraisers. I hope you have found it interesting getting to know a little about me. If you would like any more information about myself or my services, please feel free to contact me.
